BOOKS: The prop books in this show had to be specific and detailed. Many of the books were detailed on the pages as well as the covers. There were also many duplicates of books that differed only in how new they looked. For some, like the Couch of Eros, Thomasina’s journal, Lady Croom’s journals and Septimus’ portfolio, we made from scratch, using book binding and leather paint. To age up the duplicates, we used sharp objects to scratch the covers, tea for the pages and a little brown paint. For these and the letters, we hand wrote all of them, including some pages not pictured, in order to fill the page for when the characters flipped through them. The other books were made by formatting the cover digitally and printing it to scale. ‘The Peaks Traveller and Gazateer’, Gus’ portfolio, and Tomasina’s textbook was painted on.

LETTERS AND NEWSPAPERS: All of the letters were handwritten, and folded according to the style of the 1810s. The newspapers were designed by Alex (Klara) Thein, who we worked closely with to get it accurate with the script.

CHARCOAL DRAWINGS: I created some digital drawings, and worked closely with the set designer and the director, changing some details until we were happy with it. I then re-drew them with charcoal on paper, before photocopying them for the stage for longevity.
